Since the initiation of cadaveric liver transplants in 2002 and live donor liver transplants in 2005 at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine Turgut Özal Medical Center, a total of 3,550 liver transplants have been performed as of September 1, 2023, including 506 from cadavers and 3,044 from living donors. The Liver Transplant Institute, established within İnönü University in 2011, conducted simultaneous liver transplants for 5 patients in 2019, successfully restoring their health. The institute also possesses the largest liver transplant capacity in Europe and the second largest in the world.

**Liver Cross Transplantation**
In simultaneous transplants, donor and patient matches are made through the “Banu Bedestenci Sönmez Liver Cross Transplant System,” which was implemented in June 2022. This system is based on the principle of using the smallest possible cross transplants to provide the most suitable transplants to the maximum number of patients. In line with this principle, our institute performed the world’s first 4-way liver cross transplant on July 7, 2022, the world’s first 5-way liver cross transplant on October 4, 2023, and the world’s first 6-way liver cross transplant on January 23, 2024. Additionally, the second 6-way liver cross transplant was successfully performed on March 11, 2024.
