Our Institute's Cross-Transplant Experience
Helping Each Other
A donor who is medically incompatible with their own patient may often be compatible with another patient. Similarly, a patient may be incompatible with their own donor but compatible with the donor of another patient. In such cases, these patients can find medically compatible donors by exchanging their donors. The method of exchanging donors among two or more patients to secure a medically compatible transplant for each is known as cross liver transplantation.

Our Institute's Cross-Transplant Experience
Malatya: A Global Pioneer in Multiple Cross-Transplantation
Our institute is equipped with personnel and technical resources to perform six liver transplants simultaneously. This means that when necessary, multiple cross-transplants of up to six can be conducted at our institute. In simultaneous transplants, donor and patient matches are made using the “Banu Bedestenci Sönmez Liver Cross-Transplant System,” implemented in June 2022. This system is based on the principle of using the smallest possible cross-transplants to provide the most suitable transplants for the maximum number of patients. In line with this principle, our institute performed the world’s first quadruple liver cross-transplant on July 7, 2022, the world’s first quintuple liver cross-transplant on October 4, 2023, and the world’s first sextuple liver cross-transplant on January 23, 2024.
On March 11, 2024, the second sextuple liver cross-transplant in the world was successfully performed.
